ESPN analyst Bill Polian is no stranger to NFL free agency. The six-time National Football League Executive of the Year — who was honored by the Touchdown Club of New Orleans this weekend with the Pete Rozelle Award for his longtime contributions to the game — helped build multiple successful franchises during his 24 years as a general manager.

Having moved from the front office to the analyst ranks last March, Polian now serves as ESPN’s GM, analyzing the free agency process, player acquisitions, and more on television, radio and for ESPN Insider.

In anticipation of the start of free agency (today, 4 p.m. ET), the Front & Center podcast above offers a conversation with Polian, who discusses how his business philosophies changed though the years and the best free agent decision he ever made.

Polian and many other ESPN analysts and insiders will have all the latest free agency news throughout the day. (Fans can also stay updated by using ESPN.com’s Free Agent Tracker.)

London Fletcher has played 15 NFL seasons without missing a game.

Even in the offseason, the Washington Redskins linebacker does not like a lot of down time.

Just 10 days after the Redskins’ season ended in a 24-14 NFC Wildcard Playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Fletcher visited ESPN and appeared on various NFL shows to lend his insights.

“I really just enjoyed learning about everything that goes into producing a show,” he said.

Becoming an NFL television analyst “would be the ideal transition” as a post-playing career option, Fletcher said Thursday. He enjoyed his two-day stint on-air and appeared on SportsCenter, NFL Live and NFL32 to help ESPN bring fans more insights into the AFC and NFC Conference Championship games this weekend. continue reading…

Ron Jaworski and others join faculty for NFL’s “Broadcast Boot Camp”

NFL analyst Ron Jaworski on the set of NFL Matchup

ESPN Senior Coordinating Producer Gerry Matalon is on a mission.

Gerry Matalon

In his presentation at the NFL Broadcast Boot Camp, which began today at NFL Films, in Mt. Laurel, N.J., Matalon aims to give players a realistic picture of what a career in the media looks like.

His message? “This is not a football job. This is a media job talking about football. . . It is starting early, ending late. You better bring a lunch,” Matalon says.

Originating in 2007, the NFL Broadcast Boot Camp is now in its sixth season of offering current and former players an opportunity to learn some of the basics — and advanced lessons — of all aspects of broadcasting. Over 20 players are participating and each of the league’s broadcast partners shares some of their own people to help serve as “drill sergeants” during the four-day “boot camp.”

(According to the NFL, of the 105 players who took part in the Broadcast Boot Camp from 2007-2011, 44 have earned broadcasting jobs as a result of their participation in the program. That list includes ESPN’s Woody and Tim Hasselbeck.)

In addition to Matalon, ESPN will be represented on the BBC faculty by Ron Jaworski and Senior Talent Producer Jason Romano.

“You get your master’s degree in a week at the Broadcast Boot Camp,” said Jaworski, a former NFL quarterback. “I wish this was available when I was going through that transition.” continue reading…

Huddle up: Our NFL Live team makes a case for being on Hard Knocks

Before the Miami Dolphins were tabbed for HBO’s NFL reality series Hard Knocks, NFL Live host Trey Wingo and analysts Cris Carter, Tim Hasselbeck, Merril Hoge and Mark Schlereth offered their own video above for consideration.

For Hasselbeck, the experience took him back to his playing days in 2001 when he was a part of the Baltimore Ravens organization that appeared on the first Hard Knocks.

“Basically there’s no area where there isn’t a camera,” Hasselbeck recalls. “As soon as they see somebody walking to either the general manager’s office or the head coach’s office, then you see some cameramen running behind trying to capture what’s about to happen.”

Unfortunately for Hasselbeck, those cameras chronicled the day he was cut.

NFL Live producer Mike Epstein calls the video project a complete team effort. Quarterbacked by production assistant Tory Zawacki, the storylines were plausible to some degree, but also included an element of fun. continue reading…

Inside CrossFit training craze

Editor’s note: The final episodes of the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games will be televised on ESPN2 in primetime from 10-11 p.m. ET tonight and 10-11 p.m. ET tomorrow night. The CrossFit Games originally were presented via simulcast on ESPN3 in July.

For the past month, ESPN2 has televised the Reebok CrossFit Games — a multi-event athletic competition for men and women who compete in a series of rigorous workout challenges.

Sounds straightforward, but to truly appreciate The CrossFit Games, you have to grasp the concept of CrossFit.

On a recent visit to ESPN’s Bristol campus, CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman defined CrossFit as “constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement.”

Get it? ESPN NFL analyst Tim Hasselbeck gets it. So do countless ESPN employees and “CrossFitters” from around the world.

“It makes me feel functionally strong. That’s what it is — functional movements for human beings,” said Hasselbeck.

CrossFit exercises include a combination of Olympic lifts, sprints, powerlifting, swimming, endurance challenges, and more — all natural movements that can aid everyday people do everyday things.

“CrossFit is an approach to life. I feel like I’m going to eat well and workout this way because that’s who I am, not because I’m trying to look a certain way,” Hasselbeck said.

The former NFL quarterback has been doing CrossFit for three years now and learned about it in the same way many people have — from friends in the military.

“I had finished playing in the NFL and I wanted to work out and compete. A couple of friends in the army told me about CrossFit,” Hasselbeck said.

“While they were deployed, they started doing it, in part because it’s very convenient for soldiers to read workouts online and then do them. They don’t necessarily need a gym.” continue reading…
