ESPN New York’s Jared Max on what the Jason Collins announcement meant to him

Plant a seed, watch the garden grow.
Throw a stone, see rippling waters flow.
Be courageous, step where no man thought he’d go.
Make sense for others of the most fearful unknown.

Jason Collins did it — others to follow.

Last Monday morning, the story in New York — and, nationally — was Tim Tebow’s release. I spoke at length on my “Maxed Out” radio show on ESPN-NY 98.7 FM about how I felt the Jets had grossly mistreated America’s most famous backup quarterback. Then, I went home and headed for bed. continue reading…

ESPN’s Features Unit seeks to continue its Emmy-winning ways

Editor’s Note: ESPN received 41 Sports Emmy Award nominations for 2012 across its platforms (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN 3D, ABC, ESPNU, ESPNEWS and Grantland.com), led by five nods for E:60 (a total of 29 in five years), four each for Outside the Lines and ESPN Films including work by the Features Unit, and the first three ever for Grantland.com. The 34th annual Sports Emmy Awards will be held tomorrow night in Manhattan.

“And the Emmy goes to. . . ”

Ten times since ESPN’s Features Unit — a group within the Cross Platform Newsgathering Unit — was formed in 2002, the rest of that sentence ended with a product of their hard work. In fact, with 10 more possible winners in the awards to be announced Tuesday night in New York, the group has notched 50 nominations in 11 years. That’s not a bad batting average. continue reading…

The day was capped off with ESPN NASCAR lead reporter Marty Smith obtaining an exclusive sit-down interview with driver Joey Logano, who has been at the center of controversy early in this NASCAR season. Front Row gives some insight into how Smith got the interview: continue reading…

ICYMI: The Week on Front Row

Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team has the program’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking, an accomplishment celebrated by the Spokane, Wash. school as the ESPNU Campus Connection video above illustrates.

Tonight in the West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals, the Zags (29-2, 16-0) attempt to defend their top-ranked status when they meet upstart Loyola Marymount (11-22, 1-15) (9 p.m. ET, ESPN2, WatchESPN). Should Gonzaga end the Lions’ Cinderella run, it would play in the WCC Championship Game in Las Vegas on Monday night (9 p.m. ET, ESPN).

While Gonzaga is leading the WCC to greater prominence, another athletic conference’s profile is changing.

The Big East officially announced on Friday that the Catholic 7 schools will leave the conference on June 30.

In this Outside The Lines podcast, former UConn head coach Jim Calhoun shares some of his favorite Big East memories and his thoughts on the future of the NCAA with host Bob Ley.

ESPN’s College GameDay is on hand for the last Big East regular-season Syracuse-Georgetown game today (12 p.m. ET, ESPN). It’s the opener of a CGD doubleheader; the crew will be in Chapel Hill, N.C. for the nightcap when Duke visits North Carolina.

On the women’s side, Big East Championship Week coverage starts Sunday, March 10, with three quarterfinal games on ESPNU and an exclusive game on ESPN3, along with the semifinals on ESPNU and the only women’s title game to be aired on ESPN.

The madness of March doesn’t really seem all that mad once you hear Senior ESPN.com Writer Andy Katz’s season-long college basketball schedule. From his daily writing for the site to his sideline reporting at games to his in-studio work, Katz goes pretty much non-stop from Midnight Madness (October) through One Shining Moment (April).

This year, Katz’s plate has overflowed with a brand new podcast (co-hosted by analyst Seth Greenberg), hosting duties for ESPNU’s The Experts (Tuesdays, 1 p.m. ET with re-air at 2:30 p.m., ESPNU) and his new show, Katz Korner (Tuesdays, 4:30 p.m., ESPNU).

In the Front & Center podcast above, Katz covers a range of topics from his goals for Katz Korner to his affection for Outside the Lines and his thoughts on whether college basketball needs “fixing,” as some have suggested.

On Presidents Day, Outside The Lines host Bob Ley reflects on his many Head Of State ESPN interviews

Editor’s note: As the photo gallery above reflects, several U.S. Presidents have appeared on ESPN’s airwaves through the years. On Presidents Day, Outside The Lines host Bob Ley shares his memories of his interviews with the Chief Executives.

It’s impressive enough boarding Air Force One, and being seated in the forward guest cabin, with five other passengers.

Nine days before the 1992 Presidential election, that’s where I found myself.

Suddenly, out of the hallway on the left side of the cabin there was a stir, and then standing in front of us, wearing his Presidential flight jacket, is George Herbert Walker Bush. Apparently, he made it a custom to say hello to guests prior to takeoff.

We were to fly from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Detroit, and had arrangements to interview the President en route about his sporting career and interests for an Outside the Lines program airing in several days.

This was the morning after the Toronto Blue Jays had defeated the Atlanta Braves in Game 6 to win the World Series. As we were interviewing President Bush in the Air Force One Conference Room, the White House staff — from 35,000 feet over Pennsylvania — was trying to arrange a congratulatory Presidential phone call to Toronto skipper Cito Gaston.

The call never came to fruition, but I spent 20 minutes with the President as he spoke of meeting Babe Ruth during Mr. Bush’s collegiate career at Yale, and getting a base hit off of Milt Pappas during a Triple A all-star game.

Fourteen years later, under very different circumstances, I interviewed President Bush at the re-opening of the Louisiana Superdome, one year after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. continue reading…
