When ESPN NFL analyst Darren Woodson was recruited to play college football in 1987, he didn’t have a cell phone, let alone a Twitter or Facebook account. So when his nephew, senior cornerback Cole Luke (a 2013 Notre Dame signee) went through the process this season — more than 25 years later — Woodson was exposed to a whole new world of recruiting.

The former three-year starter at Arizona State who won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys as a pro discusses his eye-opening experience with Front Row:

Your nephew Cole Luke is a four-star defensive back prospect from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz. How did you help him prepare for the recruiting process?
I don’t know if it was so much me preparing my nephew for the recruiting process or him preparing me. I haven’t gone through this since ’87, so it had been a long time and the rules have changed — when there’s dead time, and when the coach can call you, and now with social media. So he had to educate me on the process first.

I basically numbered the teams that he had interest in, or the schools that he had interest in. And that was one of the mistakes at first — I’m thinking NFL, hey, let’s list the teams. And then I thought about it, let’s list the schools and the education.

What part does social media play in today’s recruiting process?
It’s huge. I cannot imagine the pressure that would be placed on me at the age of 17-18 and having Twitter and Facebook and Instagram and all these different social media outlets to go through and get recruited off of. Back when in ’87, the coaches called the house and they called your head coach. You went through that process of meeting with your head coach and your head coach setting up the meetings at the same time.

Now it’s totally different. There’s so much more pressure on these young kids to make a decision. There’s so much access to those players at the same time that you really have to be focused on making the right decision and not being overwhelmed with too much information.

Speaking of social media, you have a cameo in a recent commercial for AT&T that has a recruiting theme. What feedback have you received?
A ton of feedback. My nephew Cole is always on me joking about that little two-second blurb I got — “Hello!” — I mean, that’s all I hear. I hear from everyone. Even Herm Edwards the other day, who was the king of that word: “Hello.” He got on me about, “Why didn’t they come recruit me instead of you?” So, I’ve heard it from everyone.

• ESPN NBA analysts shared intriguing gift ideas for Michael Jordan’s 50th birthday on Sunday, Feb. 17.

• Studio E, the home of Mike & Mike in the Morning, First Take, NFL Live, and NFL 32, got a refresher last week. The operations crew took advantage of the empty studio due to offsite Super Bowl XLVII coverage and upgraded cameras, monitors and set lighting.

Coverage of the event has expanded annually as fans’ appetites for recruiting news has increased. However, the first Wednesday in February has been
circled on players and coaches’ calendars for decades.

Front Row asked some of ESPN’s college football analysts to reflect on their own Signing Days.

Danny Kanell, QB, Florida State, 1992
Signing Day is a day I’ll never forget. I was 90 percent sure I was headed to Florida State, but it didn’t hit me until I signed on the dotted line that it would make me a Seminole for life. Henri Crockett — another high school senior headed to FSU — and I held a press conference at the Olive Garden and felt like superstars.

Wednesday morning, ESPNU will air its eighth annual National Signing Day Special beginning at 7:30 a.m. ET, running all the way to 7 p.m.

Since the coverage began on the network in 2006, it has expanded and evolved from six hours to now more than 11 hours of reporting. Reporters will be stationed at 13 college campuses and 17 on-air commitments are expected from ESPN 150 players.

Top-ranked recruit Robert Nkemdiche will kick off the festivities at 7:30. The defensive end is expected to choose from among Florida, LSU or Ole Miss.

Nearly 200 people will work on the ESPNU special alone, and that’s not including the tireless efforts of the ESPN Recruiting Nation editorial team, the ESPN College Football App team, the live cut-ins from SportsCenter and additional content on ESPN3.

ESPNU has planned 120 live hits, reports and analysis from more than 23 on-air commentators throughout the day. There will also be two guest analysts involved: Gene Chizik (former Auburn head coach) and Derek Dooley (former Tennessee head coach).

And there will be a very familiar face and voice on the airwaves this time of the year: ESPN national recruiting director Tom Luginbill, who, since 2006, has been educating ESPN viewers on their teams and top recruits on National Signing Day and on the weekly ESPN Recruiting Nation show.

We gathered a few Luginbill one-liners from the past 24 hours for you to discuss at the water cooler. (We suggest you watch ESPNU, WatchESPN or ESPN3 to refresh your knowledge throughout the day.)

ESPNU’s National Signing Day Special to feature three Top 30 decisions

(L-R) Paul Biancardi and Dave Telep. (Phil Ellsworth / ESPN Images)

In the past three years, nearly 25 ESPN 100 players have revealed their college choice live on ESPN Recruiting Nation.

That number will grow once again during tomorrow’s National Signing Day Special on ESPNU (7 p.m. ET) when the Class of 2013′s No. 20 player, Kennedy Meeks (Georgetown or UNC), No. 25 Isaac Hamilton (San Diego State, UCLA, UNLV or UTEP) and No. 27 Tyler Roberson (Kansas, Syracuse or Villanova) join the hour-long program to announce their decision.

Also scheduled to join the program are Kansas coach Bill Self, Kentucky coach John Calipari and Memphis coach Josh Pastner.

As players put pen to paper on their national letters of intent, ESPN’s Paul Biancardi will be manning his own phone for updates from leading programs, coaches and players to deliver the news over the air. It’s an experience he knows well after a career in coaching that brought him to, among other leagues, the Big Ten (Ohio State), the Big East (Boston College) and the Horizon League (Wright State).

“At Wright State (as head coach) I signed a kid in late April who eventually became the Horizon League Player of the year,” Biancardi said. “It’s hard to find someone of that caliber in April, normally you try and find them the year before. I got the job in April and landed DaShaun Wood soon after; he became one of the best players in the history of Wright State basketball.” continue reading…
