The ESPN Flow Chart

The ESPN Flow Chart

With the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship playoffs starting on May 11 (NCAA Selection Show tommorow, 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU), ESPN created a new fan engagement initiative that has both grassroots and social components as part of the ongoing “It’s Not Crazy, It’s Sports” brand campaign.

The initiative shines a light on something known widely in lacrosse culture as “flow.” For the uninitiated, “flow” refers to the cascade of hair which falls outside the back of a player’s helmet. The Flow Chart allows lacrosse fans and players a fun way to show off their flow by uploading images on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #ESPNFLOWCHART. continue reading…

Greenberg, Cowherd to combine for 7-hour ESPN Radio shift — with a 7-minute break to change studios

Usually, life presents a sprint or a marathon.

Tomorrow, ESPN Radio’s Mike Greenberg and Colin Cowherd will be facing both.

With Greeny’s Mike & Mike in the Morning co-host Mike Golic off (that’s another story — well, same story, just see below), Cowherd will fill-in for “Big Mike.”

Then, after that 6-10 a.m. ET studio share, Greenberg technically will make Cowherd’s life easier by sittin’ in on The Herd from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to complete their seven-hour radio marathon.

“I’m very easy to be around — many of my ex-wives will tell you that,” Colin says with a “What, me worry?” attitude.

Predictably, Greenberg is approaching the prolonged partnership with perceptibly more prudence.

“I’m not quite sure how we will manage to do seven hours without having mutual nervous breakdowns,” he says. “We are probably the two most neurotic people on Earth.”

His fears might be warranted. continue reading…

Before BCS title game, Golic and his Fighting Irish sons encounter Bama fans — in a Connecticut diner

A Connecticut ‘Bama fan in Mike Golic’s favorite café turned the tables on an otherwise relaxing holiday respite from his family’s quest for the BCS National Championship.

“Unfortunately, unlike my sons, I never played for a championship in college or in the NFL,” said Golic, co-host of ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike in the Morning, regarding the rare time he got to spend with his sons Mike, Jr., an offensive lineman, and Jake, a tight end, on Notre Dame’s topped-ranked, undefeated Fighting Irish squad. “And I’m reminded of it all the time.”

That’s the kind of grief “the boys,” as Mike refers to them, gave their dad during their recent stopover in their hometown of Avon, Conn. They were en route from South Bend, Ind. to Miami for Monday’s Discover BCS National Championship Game against No. 2 Alabama (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Radio & ESPN 3D). continue reading…
