ESPN’s Global Earth Month Events

At ESPN, sustainability is a 12-month proposition. The company has implemented many successful programs to limit its use of natural resources and to enhance its commitment to the environment. Whether it’s recycling paper, batteries, pens and sneakers or composting food and food containers, ESPN offers its employees many simple ways to be “green.”

Each April, Earth Month is a time to spotlight environmental responsibility and 2013 demonstrated ESPN’s biggest commitment yet. continue reading…

Robert Flores gets ‘Francona’ed’ on his way to LA SportsCenter studio

Tuesday’s 1 a.m. ET SportsCenter had its usual fill of highlights, discussion and the ever-popular #SCTop10.

It also contained the amusing highlight lead-in above, playing off Cleveland Indians manager (and former ESPN analyst) Terry Francona’s struggles with finding his new home park, Progressive Field, for Monday’s home-opener.

“We try to take advantage of opportunities to do different things whenever we can,” said Anchor Stan Verrett. “Sometimes it gives us a chance to get out of the studio and do some fun things. We have to pick our spots. The show is SportsCenter, not Saturday Night Live, but used sparingly, the skits can keep the show fresh. We are fortunate to have a creative team here, and the pre-production time to get things done.” continue reading…

Horde of ESPN film aficionados offer Oscar outlook; analyst Mark Schlereth laments Red Dawn snub

ESPN employees love the movies.

Sometimes, they’re producing them: College football analyst Ed Cunningham won at the 2012 Oscars for underwriting the Best Documentary, Undefeated.

Sometimes, they’re watching and then critiquing them: On Friday, SportsCenter anchor and movie maven Adnan Virk shared his 2013 Academy Award picks with Front Row.

Sometimes, they’re appearing in them: ESPN NFL analyst and ESPN Radio co-host Mark Schlereth (Red Dawn) and SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett (Playing For Keeps) made 2012 cameos in major films.

Tonight, even the sports world turns to Hollywood for winners and losers, watching the 85th Oscars on ABC (7 p.m. ET). To celebrate the annual night of gowns and tuxedos, Front Row strolled the halls of ESPN and asked employees to share their Oscar insights. . . and sample their acceptance speeches.

The results are rivetting performances from SportsCenter co-anchors Hannah Storm and Kevin Negandhi, among others. Cameos include ESPN makeup artist Tiffany Hall-Scarmana (on the cosmetic magic of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey); E:60 feature producer John Minton III (on storytelling in Zero Dark 30); and E:60′s Andy Tennant (on Argo).

Schlereth, an actor of some repute, portrayed a high school football coach in Red Dawn, a remake of the 1984 cult classic.

Somehow, neither Verrett nor Schlereth were among the Best Supporting Actor nominees and Schlereth calmly shared his views on the obvious “snub” below.

LAPC home to Kia NBA Countdown;
Magic joins Broussard, Barry, Wilbon

The Kia NBA Countdown will feature Chris Broussard, Magic Johnson, Jon Barry and Michael Wilbon

LOS ANGELES — The NBA is back on Christmas Day, ESPN and ABC’s NBA pregame show is moving to the West Coast, and our Los Angeles Production Facility (LAPC) is ready, willing and more than able to help.

Kia NBA Countdown, the pregame show airing on both ESPN and ABC, will originate from ESPN’s LAPC at L.A. Live.

Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson will join Jon Barry, Michael Wilbon and Chris Broussard throughout the entire season.

Front Row sat down with Judi Cordray, vice president and general manager in charge of ESPN’s LAPC, for a quick chat about the show’s arrival as well as other happenings at the facility.

Front Row: How long has the team at the Los Angeles Production Center (LAPC) been preparing for the arrival of Kia NBA Countdown?

Judi Cordray: We have been discussing the possibility of doing the show from Los Angeles for several months now. Once the decision was made, it was a matter of set design, staffing, and of course, the big question of whether we’d even have an NBA season this year.

FR: Will the studio space be devoted exclusively to Kia NBA Countdown?
JC:
The studio space will be shared with our other regular productions. Our two daily anchor productions are SportsCenter and Nación ESPN.

FR: In addition to Kia NBA Countdown, what other shows, productions and content are produced out of the LAPC these days?

JC: Well, since we officially opened the facility in early April 2009, we’ve been responsible for helping produce a significant amount of programming and content spanning across our linear, radio and digital platforms, including: SportsCenter (1 a.m. ET), Nación ESPN on Deportes and Dos Network, Audibles, The Next Round, Grantland Podcast, Winners Bracket as part of ESPN Sports Saturday on ABC, Lakers: The Triangle Forum for ESPNLA.com, a number or promotional shoots for various shows — most recently college football and The Muppets movie promo — and bureau cam shoots for Around The Horn, PTI, Press Pass, Deportes’ Cronometro, Juego Cruzado, Golpe a Golpe, Jore Ramos Y su Banda and many others.

FR: What do you envision as some of the benefits of producing Kia NBA Countdown from Los Angeles? continue reading…

By Design: LAPC graphics

Sunshine, palm trees and beautiful tanned people — our LA crew must have all the fun.

But it’s a serious operation, our West Coast production facility. Located in LA Live next to the Staples Center, its studios generate the SportsCenter 1 a.m. ET show for “the wheel” (which means it is the show that gets rebroadcast).

It’s also where the new NACION show emanates from (the Spanish language equivalent of SportsNation).

The bureau cams in this facility support many other shows, including Around the Horn, Audibles, and The Next Round with Jim Beam.

They are also the primary point of broadcast for The Longhorn Network and our Caribbean network.

It’s a busy place.

Perhaps even more critically however, it serves as the backup for the entire Bristol broadcast center should anything ever happen to it…like a hurricane or an earthquake. (Let’s not mention any names, but she was an unwelcome East Coast guest and rhymes with “styrene.”)

“Our LA production center needs to be able to assume transmission for all our networks within seconds of a cataclysmic event,” said Judi Cordray, who is the one in charge of the entire operation.

No pressure, Judi.

When this facility opened in 2009, it drew a large portion of its personnel from the Bristol, Conn. headquarters.

To make them feel at home, we designed several murals that spoke of the home soil. This mural features some of the best-loved archival images of the campus and the original SportsCenter.

In this new setting, these familiar pictures take on a whole new meaning and inspire some pride in how we’ve grown.

Another oldie but goodie is the This is SportsCenter mural, which shows frames from each of the award-winning promos from over the years. continue reading…
