ICYMI: The Week on Front Row

ESPN’s production assistants and content associates, with the oversight of highlight producers and managers, produce nearly 1,000 highlights every month. As a way to honor the hard work these folks do night-in and night-out, the ESPN Highlight of the Month (HOM) award was created by Adam Strain, Highlight Producer in ESPN Studio Production.

February’s HOM winner was Production Assistant Jarrod Ficklin. Working on the NBA Unit in Studio Production, Ficklin is credited with being the brains behind a football-themed highlight based off a Feb. 23 matchup between the Miami Heat and the Philadelphia 76ers. The highlight aired following the game on the 11 p.m. ET SportsCenter. continue reading…

ESPN NFL blogger Pat Yasinskas reflects on Notre Dame star Manti Te’o's visit to Gruden’s QB Camp

Pat Yasinskas joined ESPN in January 2008 as the NFC South writer for ESPN.com’s NFL Nation blog network.

He previously covered the Carolina Panthers for the Charlotte Observer and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the Tampa Tribune. In addition to following these teams, as well as the Saints and Falcons, in his current role, Yasinskas is providing scouting reports in the month ahead on the 12 NFL Draft prospects who are participating in the fourth installment of Jon Gruden’s QB Camp series.(Full QB Camp TV schedule.)

Yasinskas has attended several QB Camp film sessions in Gruden’s Tampa office (aka the F.F.C.A., or Fired Football Coaches Association), including Monday’s visit with All-America Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o, a projected first-round pick. (The SportsCenter Special: Gruden’s QB Camp: Manti Te’o episode will debut Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. ET.)

Yasinskas filed a recap of the Te’o visit for ESPN.com. Below he discusses with Front Row what he’s had the opportunity to observe at QB Camp this spring.

2012 -- Gruden's QB Camp logo

This is the first time you have covered Gruden’s QB Camp. What are your impressions so far?
It’s beyond what I expected. It’s fascinating. I’m blown away by what a big process it is. The half-hour shows with commercials are probably 23 minutes. They are doing four hours of film work and chalkboard work, and in some cases they are also doing an hour-long workout. What you see on TV is probably one-eighth of what goes on. Also, the preparation by Jon — he has so much film of each kid, as well as plays that are similar to the points he’s trying to make. He obviously spends days getting ready for each guy. And I can honestly say that from an X’s and O’s standpoint, I have learned more in these four sessions than I have in the 18 or 19 years that I’ve been covering the NFL.

What’s the reaction of the players when they come through QB Camp?
I’ve been surprised that everyone I’ve seen has been very relaxed. It’s amazing the comfort level that all of them have developed with Jon. None of them looks like a 22-year-old college kid who knows he’s on national TV. They look like they are just sitting there with a coach, chatting and breaking down film and drawing up plays. I’ve been very impressed with how I’ve seen the kids handle it.

ESPN Sport Science metrics will determine the winner from the 16 finalists in the Greatest Athlete of All Time series. (ESPN)

What’s a great 50th birthday present for an avid golfer? How about a chance to compete against Tiger Woods?

That’s what ESPN is giving birthday boy Michael Jordan on Sunday, matching MJ against Eldrick in the initial bracket-round contest of ESPN’s on-going “The Greatest Athlete of All Time” series.

“Strictly coincidental,” said Don Skwar, senior coordinating producer. “Well, maybe not strictly. We were originally going to start Feb. 5, but we didn’t want to run it while Jordan’s 50th birthday content was airing, so we figured we’d start on its last day, which happens to be his birthday.”

When ESPN Sport Science entered the project last spring, the research and production teams were charged with gathering data on 86 athletes (five in each of 16 categories, except football which had 11 athletes), but actually “did homework on five times that many” according to show host John Brenkus.

“We’ve been able to gather so much data on athletes over six years by either having them come through the lab or by doing segments on them, that we always wanted to take that data and settle the argument on who’s the greatest athlete,” Brenkus said.

“We try to be both educational and entertaining, gathering information first, then presenting it in as visually a stimulating way as possible.” (ESPN Sport Science pieces — experiments on human performance using the latest scientific technology and seen across various ESPN platforms — have received three Emmys and been nominated nine times).

This Sunday, the 10 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. SportsCenters will air the Tiger-Jordan showdown, the winner of which will be revealed at the end of each of the segments.

While ESPN Sport Science analysis will determine daily advancers from Sunday through March 3, it was the fans’ vote which whittled down the original nominees and created some surprises along the way.

“I was pleasantly surprised that Jim Brown won the football category,” Skwar said. “ESPN.com gets a younger audience, so I thought voters might go with Jerry Rice or someone like that because Brown is from another era.”

Brenkus, who recently chatted with fans on ESPN.com regarding the bracket, said: “I was surprised LeBron did not fare better with the public. As purely an athlete he was very high on our metric system, but it seems the negative feelings toward him have not totally gone away.”

Brenkus warns the road to the ESPN Sport Science “Greatest Athlete of All Time” remains unpredictable.

“There are big surprises in each of the remaining rounds — someone people will not expect,” he says. “And there’s an athlete in the Final 4 no one would have picked, but once they see, they’ll get it that absolutely that athlete deserves to be there. That’s what’s been fun — making people think, ‘Wow, I didn’t know how good that athlete really was!’”

NFL Draft prospect Brandon Weeden talks Gruden QB Camp, MNF, more

Quarterback Brandon Weeden isn’t your typical NFL prospect. In fact, he’s been through the draft process a time before.

Prior to attending Oklahoma State University and leading the Cowboys to the best record in school history in 2011 (11-1), Weeden was a second-round selection by the New York Yankees in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft.

Pitching a few years in the minor leagues with multiple organizations, Weeden enrolled at OSU in 2007 and eventually found success on the gridiron in Stillwater.

Among draft prospects, he is currently ranked 51st overall according to ESPN NFL DraftTracker.

Weeden had the chance to visit ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., campus Wednesday when he was a guest on multiple ESPN platforms.

In the video above, he talks about the ESPN commentators he admires, what he likes about Monday Night Football and his experience in Jon Gruden’s QB Camp, which will debut Wednesday, April 18, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
