Doug Collins gets ‘reunited’ with Mike & Mike and his prep pays off

Last week, former NBA All-Star and head coach Doug Collins spent the morning after Game 3 of the NBA Finals in ESPN’s Bristol studio cohosting Mike & Mike with Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic. At the conclusion of his four-hour on-air stint, the 1972 U.S. Olympian took a few minutes to speak with Front Row about his experience on the set and a variety of other topics.

Collins, the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers this season, has years of broadcasting experience on television and radio. In the video above, he mentions a broadcasting tie he has with one of the show’s hosts that predates Mike & Mike. Even that experience did not prevent Collins from doing his homework for the co-hosting assignment. continue reading…

ESPN Films and espnW’s Nine for IX documentary series focuses on female sports icons, issues

NEW YORK — Yesterday, ESPN Films and espnW announced the film slate for Nine for IX, a documentary series focused on captivating stories of women in sports told through the lens of female filmmakers.

The nine-part documentary series from the producers of 30 for 30 is executive produced by Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, a former SportsCenter anchor, and Jane Rosenthal. ESPN President John Skipper and Rosenthal were hosts to an exclusive first look for media, filmmakers and other sports industry members.

“Storytelling about women in sports is an ongoing effort at ESPN, and after the recognition of Title IX last summer, the Nine for IX series is a perfect extension and partnership between espnW and ESPN Films,” said Libby Geist, associate director of development for ESPN Films.

“The series tells nine distinct stories by female filmmakers for all our fans, male and female.”

Nine for IX film topics include an intimate look at Pat Summitt, college sports’ most successful coach ever; the largely unknown history of Katarina Witt and her link with East Germany’s secret police; and the focus of sex in the marketing of female athletes. The series is scheduled to premiere on July 2 on ESPN and the films will air over consecutive Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. ET.

Director Nelson George explores Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier’s style in 30 for 30 short film, Disdain the Mundane

The next installment of ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 Shorts premieres today on Grantland.com, showcasing basketball Hall of Famer Walt “Clyde” Frazier’s unique fashion and broadcasting style.

Director Nelson George tells Front Row how this short compares to the long-form documentary he directed last year, The Announcement, and why he chose to tell Frazier’s story.

How would you compare directing a full-length documentary to a short like Disdain The Mundane?
Directing The Announcement took me into a variety of worlds: the world of the Los Angeles Lakers’ Showtime era, the late ’80s/early ’90s Los Angeles and the world of HIV activism. With Disdain, it was very focused on one man’s very special view of himself and style, both on court, dressing and in use of language. Magic Johnson’s story took place on a large canvas. Clyde’s piece is very intimate.

What did you learn from directing The Announcement that helped you on this particular film? continue reading…
