Behind The Scenes

Robin Roberts visits fellow cancer survivor Stuart Scott for Friday GMA feature

They are kindred spirits, bonded by the work they do, the paths they chose and the challenges they’ve faced.

ABC Good Morning America host Robin Roberts and ESPN SportsCenter anchor Stuart Scott both make their livings on national television. Both joined ESPN in the 1990s – Roberts in 1990 and Scott in 1993 – where they rose to national prominence based on talent, passion and creativity. And as cancer survivors, they both continue to inspire others through their courageous, public messages of hope.

They reconnected this week when Roberts and a Good Morning America crew traveled to Connecticut to produce a segment on Scott’s battle with cancer.

“And seeing him thriving – not surviving, but thriving – I think people will take that and apply it to whatever it is that they are faced with.” – GMA’s Robin Roberts on how Stuart Scott can inspire

Similar to last month’s New York Times feature story, the GMA piece (airing on ABC Friday morning, April 18) will focus on two key aspects of Scott’s life that give the three-time cancer survivor continued strength: his family and his fitness.

To that end, Roberts visited mixed martial arts gym Plus One Defense Systems to interview Scott and capture a workout with his trainer Darin Reisler. From there, they visited the school choir of Scott’s daughter in the midst of a singing rehearsal.

After the interview, Roberts, a recent addition to The V Foundation Board, reflected on Scott, a 2011 recipient of the Spirit of Jimmy V Award.

“What people will take away after seeing this [is] no matter what your challenge is, no matter what it is you are going through, I guarantee you are going to rethink it,” Roberts said. “And if you get that dire diagnosis, I hope by seeing Stu in action, that it will take away some of the anxiety that you can’t live your life, that you can’t work out, that you can’t work. And seeing him thriving – not surviving, but thriving – I think people will take that and apply it to whatever it is that they are faced with.”
