Former Alabama quarterback and 2010 BCS National Champion Greg McElroy is joining ESPN as a college football analyst for the SEC Network. McElroy joins analysts Jesse Palmer and Tim Tebow along with commentators Paul Finebaum, Brent Musburger and Joe Tessitore on a growing roster of experts contributing to the network’s coverage. The current analyst lineup collectively represents four SEC Football Championship Game wins, with McElroy and Tebow winning game MVPs in back-to-back years (2008, 2009).

Front Row caught up with McElroy to find out on how he’s transitioning into broadcasting.

What do you want to see the SEC Network offer fans next year?
Before playing in the SEC, I did not fully understand the passion, the pageantry, the tradition and the atmosphere that an SEC stadium could provide. The SEC Network will allow people into the world of the Southeastern Conference and will help them understand what makes it so special.

What got you interested in being a sportscaster?
When I finished my college career, I was invited to serve as a guest analyst [on ESPN] in Arizona for the National Championship Game. I went into it with zero expectations and viewed it as just another opportunity to discuss college football. I had an incredible time and from that point forward, I knew this was what I wanted to do.

How do you plan to prepare to be a college football analyst?
I have always considered myself a bit of a film junkie. Throughout my time in the NFL, I would watch countless hours of film on not only the upcoming opponent, but also other teams around the league. I plan on preparing for my role as an analyst the same way.

What are your outside interests beyond football?
Truthfully, football has always consumed much of my life. When I haven’t been training or watching film, I was trying to spend as much time as possible with my friends and family. I must say, I am looking forward to taking part in a few leisurely activities.

Editor’s note: ESPN Radio’s Paul Finebaum interviewed new SEC Network colleague McElroy this week on “The Paul Finebaum Show.”
