ESPN’s Carol Stiff recognized as a WISE Woman of the Year

Carol Stiff – who in 20-plus years at ESPN has become one of the most influential people in women’s college athletics – was recognized earlier this week by the Women in Sports and Events (WISE) organization during its 19th annual awards luncheon in New York City. The event was emceed by ESPN SportsCenter anchor, Lindsay Czarniak.

“When I found out I was going to be given this great honor as the WISE Woman of the Year, I was completely stunned, humbled, just thrilled to be among the many strong women who have won this award before,” Stiff said. “I’m honored indeed.”

In Stiff’s current position, vice president of content program and integration for espnW, she’s playing a significant role in the development and production of the Nine for IX film series. The series kicked off this week with the digital short, Coach, a documentary on legendary coach Vivian Stringer.

Stiff joins an elite group of previous WISE Women of the Year recipients including tennis legend Billie Jean King, Good Morning America anchor (and former ESPNer) Robin Roberts, former University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt, and ESPN CFO and Executive Vice President Christine Driessen, who presented Stiff with her award.

Recipients of the Women of the Year award were voted on by the WISE membership. They were selected based on women who are visible, vocal leaders and serve as resources for other females.

WISE also announced Dick Ebersol, former chairman of NBC Sports, as the recipient of the 2013 WISE Champion Award, an annual citation that is given to a male executive who has championed women in the workplace.

In addition to Stiff’s most recent recognition, in April 2013, she received the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health Leadership Award. Earlier this month, she was recognized by the Alliance of Women Coaches as a “Bigger Picture of Being a Champion.”
