With last week’s announcement that ESPN has been honored with two Edward R. Murrow awards, we saw it as a good time to catch up with Beein Gim, the producer of the award-winning “Angel in the Outfield” piece.
Gim, who also won an Emmy last month, has been a feature producer for E:60 since 2008 and before that had worked at The New York Times, ABC Sports, Major League Baseball productions and HBO. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Columbia University (1996) where Gim studied English and religion, a combination that might strike some as an odd route to sports journalism. Gim begs to differ.
“I’m a firm believer that in this business, you learn by doing,” Gim said. “It’s not so much what you major in – a lot of times people think, ‘Oh you need to be a journalism or communications major in order to be in TV.’
“But I think it’s more crucial to get the job experience — get out there and get internships and get an exposure to other people in the industry, as opposed to focusing on that in school,” she said. “By broadening what you’re learning in college it makes you more of an asset to wherever you are going to wind up.”
Gim has been just that for E:60 and will again be producing pieces for the Fall flight of E:60 which kicks off on August 28.
