Behind The Scenes

Mowins covers all the bases in a grueling 18-day, multi-sport road trip

Last month, ESPN play-by-play announcer Beth Mowins set out on an 18-day road trip which involved seven telecasts across five events.

Even more amazing, Mowins will play a part in presenting four sports in a 12-day period. (See her complete itinerary at the bottom of this post.)

She is currently in the home stretch heading to the NCAA Women’s College Cup soccer championships in Kennesaw, Ga. this weekend.

A self-proclaimed “America’s Houseguest,” Mowins had 13 nights in hotels, was fortunate to spend three nights with friends for the holiday break and was at home for just two nights in San Diego during that time span.

She’s logged many miles flying and driving — swinging through seven airports and trekking to those out of the way college campuses by car.

Mowins said: “It has been a thoroughly enjoyable journey with relatively easy travel so far (fingers crossed), despite the time zone changes and sports shifts. The weather has been cooperative and the check-in lines have been short at the airport, hotels and rental car counters. I am a little worried my luck will run out soon.

“It was challenge to figure out what to wear, how to do game research on the road and to actually know, what city I was in! But I wouldn’t trade it for the world: There is nothing better than the human drama of athletics, especially as I head to the national championship in soccer this weekend. It’s the real, reality TV.”
